How to store wood properly?

The quality of firewood depends on its type (hardwood, softwood) and how it is stored. For good combustion, wood needs to be dry (between 15 and 20% moisture content). But beware: if it\'s too dry, its calorific value will decrease.

Why store wood and for how long?

When you want to save on heating and protect the environment, you can heat with wood. As well as being economical, it\'s also very pleasant. But the ecological balance of wood heating is only positive if the logs are properly burned. Fresh wood has a moisture content of 40% to 70%. Instead of burning, it emits a lot of smoke and unpleasant gases. For good combustion, wood must be dry: its residual moisture content must not exceed 15-20%.

I cut my own firewood

If you cut your own wood, it will heat your home 3 times over! Remember to store it in good time to ensure that you have enough dry wood for the cold season. For logs to dry properly, three conditions must be met:

  1. Store in a sunny spot
  2. Adequate air circulation
  3. The wood must be well protected from the elements (rain and snow).

What should I bear in mind when storing firewood?

If you decide to store firewood along the wall, choose the south side. Don\'t place the logs directly against the wall, but 10-12 cm from it. This will allow the wood to breathe more easily. To protect your logs from rain and snow, remember to cover them. Make sure that the cover does not block air circulation around the log.

It\'s also important to protect them from ground moisture. For example, you can stack them on pallets, stones or cleats.
